Meet Phillipa
Founder of THISis REiNVENTION solar-powered food truck & NHS Fellow of Sustainability
am a passionate advocate for sustainable food systems and climate change education with a diverse background that spans across healthcare, expedition medicine and environmental activism. My journey has taken me from a youth competitive swimmer foundation in discipline and commitment, to medical school, where I graduated in 2016 with first class honours. A passion for adventure during my formative years as a doctor led me to embark on a path of service, volunteering to offer free healthcare in disaster-stricken areas of the Philippines and Gorkha, Nepal.
My international work continued with lead medic roles and indigenous community advocacy projects in South-East Sulawesi, Indonesia and Honduras, Costa Rica and Panama.
My love for the ocean ignited a profound awareness of climate change's impact, particularly on vulnerable communities. As a weekend scuba instructor, I saw coral bleaching first hand. This led me to further studies in public health and climate change with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. I developed a keen interest in sustainable food systems and the profound impact of diet choices on our planet. In particular, broadening my perspective on healthcare accessibility, societal inequalities and community resilience.
The pandemic brought me back to the UK to train as a general practitioner at the forefront of sustainable healthcare. As a member of the Food and Sustainable Food Special Interest Group within Public Health, and as an environmental activity, I create meaningful change in the intersection of health and the environment.
My latest brainchild, THISiS_REiNVENTION, is an innovative and dynamic venture promoting whole food and plant-based diets. Our energy-independent food truck, powered by solar energy and equipped with on-site composting, reimagines conscious dining. Through "Meat-Free Mondays" events and thought-provoking Q&A sessions, we engage with individuals and businesses pioneering positive change in food and wellness within the context of climate change.
I continue to leverage my medical expertise as a Fellow with NHS England designing educational resources for healthcare professionals and emphasizing sustainability's role in healthcare practices. I founded and chair the Green Group at the Royal Devon and University Hospitals NHS Trust, cultivating collaborative efforts to integrate eco-consciousness into healthcare.
